They want us to be invisible. But try not to be offended . . . . it isn't personal.
That's a fact of life in the commerical AV world. Everyone wants a system, but no one wants to see it or acknowledge it. Speakers in my church? Heck yeah! Just don't interfere with the Byzantine frescos. Switcher/scaler in my conference space? You betcha! But it better fit behind the custom shroud of my Heckler credenza so no one knows its there. Multi-user collaboration in my college classroom? Well, duh! But I don't wanna see one stinking wire! Face it . . . we're second class citizens. Always trying to hide our life's work behind something. Letting archtitects and interior designers push us around. Sometimes even sacrificing function for form or transparency. But we've gotten really good at it! Call it job security. We're like Dutch baroque realist painters forced to work only in office white, almond, and ivory. The beige curse.
Whenever I need to clear my head, I like to go visit the other AV industry. The vibrant world of live events! The goateed evil twin of the conference room and education space market. No need to hide the tech here! We show up to hear the A and see the V in "AV". Its not there to facilitate some other agenda . . . it IS the agenda. A couple weeks ago we took the family to see my son's favorite band, Alien Weaponry. The gear was one of the stars of the show. And nobody expected it to be hidden behind the scenes. Explaining it all to my kids during setup and teardown was a ton of fun and they had a great time seeing it work.
In a couple weeks BTX will be exhibiting at the Live Design International (LDI) show in Las Vegas November 22-24. This is where you find the newest technology for live event sound, video, and lighting. I love that I get to work in both worlds and share tricks from the commercial AV world in the live event world and vice versa. BTX has tons of solutions on both sides of the fence, so hopefully you don't view us as being 100% in one world or the other. We are effectively the place where these worlds collide. So make sure you come see us at booth #2647 this year at LDI! And if you've never gone to LDI, maybe you should check it out.
New from Neutrik - an XLR solution to push power and cat5e down the same cable! Their usual bulletproof D-hole XLR design now supports two power pins for up to 16 amps and 50 volts with 8 pins for network data. Belden has a great cable to match this system too. Ideal for applications where you need to power a downstream lighting device, LED panel, or Dante product. Contact me for more info or check it out on the site.
